Is it "un-African" to be gay?

Homosexuality is punishable by the death penalty in four countries in Africa and millions view LGBT people as ‘un-African’.

We speak to Bisi Alimi who stunned the nation when he came out as gay on live television in Nigeria – a stunt that almost cost him his life.

This episode of ‘Off Limits’ examines how colonial powers criminalised queer people and where in Africa the next fight for equality is likely to happen.

Off Limits is our brand new series that tackles taboos and answers the toughest questions.

  1. This is pathetic. Because the Nigerian president disagrees with the idea of homosexuality they want to create a narrative to push the agenda on the American public (and other places in the world) through network news media. It’s a DISGRACE. Mainstream media needs to stop trying to impose this lifestyle on the public. Many upon many disagree with it. This video is nothing more than propaganda. PEOPLE DO NOT AGREE.

  2. I’m quite surprised that Sky allowed comments on this item.

They usually act as the censorship police and block comments very much like they did with the earlier item on Trans people self medicating.

    Equally as boring a subject.

  4. Anti LGBT laws were introduced in Africa by the British, so its ironic that some now regard them as a defence against foreign influence.

  5. The ignorance in this day and age is overwhelming. They allow American preachers to come to their country and tell them how to think and don’t see the manipulation. Those preachers look down on Africans as though they cannot think on their own. Their response was that "even animals don’t do it…" referring to homosexuality, however a brief amount of research reveals there are over 1,000 species that engage in homosexual relationships. Penguins alone have exclusive same sex relationships in zoos all over the world. These government officials need to get with the times. People are born that way and there is nothing wrong with someone loving another person, nothing.

  6. Being a Christian and Muslim is un-African. Christianity is a West Asian religion like Islam and before some dumbass with no history knowledge comes to me and says Ethiopia, Emperor Ezana imported the religion to Aksum (modern day Northern Ethiopia) in 332 CE from Rome where he was baptised. Christianity didn’t become a state religion in Ethiopia until 340 CE.

  7. It’s very un-European to have areas in countries where the respective country’s language is not even spoken and it’s turned in to a crime ridden slum….but we have to put up with it.

  8. It’s unhuman to be a Homosexual. Abnormal, a pervert , a freak under the influences of Demons.

  9. This is sad because it hits home very close for me. My dad is from Nigeria I’m 31 years old and we haven’t spoken since I came out at 21. Now I’m wondering is this because why.

  10. this guy probably needs to have a discussion about his childhood trauma and how homosexual Behavior was imprinted on him at a young age.

  11. It is only the more sophisticated countries which happen to be predominantly white, do people have any common sense and civility. Africa is still in the Stone Age.

  13. That’s a lie. It has never been accepted in any form of Ativan culture – pre or post colonialism that homosexuality is accepted as a normal form of living. Why get someone on here to lie?

  14. Sexuality utilised (In Africa) as a Propaganda Tool for DIVIDE & RULE !!
What about the Chinese, or the Indians or the Arabs??

    When will Africans learn❗️
Things are done in THEIR favour
    and NOT YOURS. ‼️ 🙄
