What's Life Really Like In Sierra Leone? | NowThis World

Sierra Leone is preparing for its national elections. It’s the country’s fourth elections since the end of its 11-year civil war but only the second elections that’s being held without UN oversight. We know that violence has been a staple in recent elections, but that got us thinking about other aspects of life in the country. So what is life really like in Sierra Leone?

We also have to mention that Sierra Leone has been marred by conflict, violence, and disease over the last two decades—because their impacts can still be felt today. The country spiraled into civil war from 1991-2002. Tens of thousands of civilians died as a result. Hundreds were subjected to brutal limb amputation as punishment and women were subject to widespread sexual abuse. Both sides of the conflict—rebels and government forces—used child soldiers in their fights. And up to a quarter of the population was displaced.

In 1999 a ceasefire was brokered and UN troops were deployed to help keep the peace but the war wasn’t officially declared over until 2002.

Then in 2014, Sierra Leone was one of the hardest hit by the regional ebola outbreak. There were over 14,000 confirmed cases of the virus, and nearly 4,000 people died as a result. Citizens have grown mistrustful of the government after its perceived mismanagement of the ebola crisis.

And in 2017 deadly mudslides killed hundreds of people and displaced hundreds more.

The scars and impacts of these issues affect daily life in the country to this day. Because Sierra Leone still suffers some from the geographical and political divisions that fueled its civil conflict, a peaceful, democratic transition of power would be a major milestone. But minor violence related to the elections has already broken out, and the United Nations has expressed its concern.

  1. I was in Makeni, North West Sierra Leone, during the Mudslide in Freetown. It was heartbreaking. Everybody knew somebody who was effected, businesses closed and the mourning was felt by everyone.

  2. This is super bad clickbait. Please quit youtube, why does this remind me of a PUBG video.

  3. This is slyly incorrect. 70%+ Muslim? That’s such a lie, it’s more like half an half. Also the pronunciation of Temne (Tim-in-nee) & Mende (Men-day) was off.

  4. Sierra Leone is a very rich country inhabited by very poor people. The same can be said for the entire continent of Africa.

  5. Hey guys! Versha here. We mentioned Sierra Leone’s upcoming elections, but there’s a lot happening around the world in the next few months – what country’s elections are you paying the most attention to? Let us know!

  6. The rice part is right.. I live in Sierra Leone and I eat rice nearly every day. I was born and raised in the UK.. I miss British food.. But the country is amazing.. I recommend going there for a holiday..!

  7. But But females in america are the most suffering being in the planet, how dare you show other people suffering, how dare you ????

  8. I’m just so angry. My continent is blessed with an abundance of natural resources yet look at the state of it. Why?! Im going to do something to change this. This makes me so angry, the fact that there is so much money beneath the soil of Africa, yet we have the poorest nations, least education and horrible medical treatment. Something needs to be change drastically. We need to come to the realisation that the current government system clearly does not work for Africa. This is the equivalence of a man have 100 tonnes of diamonds beneath him worth millions yet he starves and begs for food yet he watches and outsider come and take the diamonds and make a living out of it. DR Congo alone is the richest country in the world in terms raw natural resources amounting to about 21 trillion dollars. With good business and trade that number can easily double. However the Congo remains one of the poorest countries in the world. Wtf is wrong with the government doesn’t it hurt for them to see that millions of their people are in pain and need. It hurts me so much to the point that I want to cry for my continent. Africa should genuinely be on the same level as Europe by now. Idgaf about colonialism it’s ended, we need to move on and seek a better future rather than blaming others and looking to the past. LETS MOVE ON AND BUILD A BIGGER BETTER AFRICA.

  9. This is not at all what ‘life is really like in Sierra Leone.’ This is a socio-political history that has absolutely nothing to do what ‘life is really like.’ Where is the sense of humour or positive social exchanges? This is terrible marketing!

  10. There is ONLY ISLAM, as the quran and hadith prove without doubt or question.
The "christians" and "other".. "religions" need to accept this and convert.

  11. It’s a shame that you ignored Britain’s overwhelming contribution to ending the civil war.

  12. I’m from Sierra Leon I was only 3 months old until my mom and I and other families traveled to Kenya and then America and I miss my family that are still there I hope I see them again

  13. U.N. Is evil…. SOCIALISM IS DEATH AND IGNORANCE IS NOT BLISS…. QUESTION EVERYTHING AND STOP THE BIGOTED, LEFTIST, RADICAL CULT DEAD IN ITS TRACKS…

  14. Wtf how has it flipped women used to have 10+ kids because the kids died at birth, now the mums die at 5.

  15. A person from Serria Leone should have done this she didn’t even know how to pronounce some terms

  16. This video only shows gloom and doom, it is very misleading. The citizens are very fun, you’ll see the poorest person but they’ll still manage to have fun and not be pessimistic. Overall there are developed places and underdeveloped places in Sierra Leone, the same as any country.

  17. This video is a good overview. Check out the book "Sierra Leone: Inside the war" for lots of information on the country.

  18. This country is close to a country where my ancestors are born in the very continental region.

  19. We are so rich in natural resources but yet known as one of the poorest nations in the world. A county where millions dollars worth of diamonds are being discovered at least yearly.

  20. My brother is everywhere. Go to Ghana. The place where the get the Gold got the most poorest people. So is evrywhere
