Burkina Faso military chief takes power following ouster of president

Burkina Faso’s military chief General Navere Honore Traore has seized power following the ouster of the president by the army.

The announcement was made by the army to anti-government protesters. The news prompted an outburst of cheers from demonstrators demanding President Blaise Compaore’s resignation. The army earlier dissolved the government and the parliament. Compaore in a statement said the presidency is now vacant and elections for a new leader will be held within 90 days. A heavily armed convoy believed to be carrying the embattled president was seen travelling towards the southern town of Po, near the border with Ghana. The African country has been the scene of protests against Compaore’s attempt to extend his 27-year rule.
